Kathryn G. Weisberg
b. Oakland, California
Kathryn's earliest exposure to art and painting was through her great aunt Judith, an outstanding amateur Watercolorist whose paintings hung prominently in the homes of her grandparents. Judith’s ability to capture light and atmosphere through her use of transparency was exceptional and inspired Kathryn’s first serious attempts at painting around age 10. Though already drawing in graphite and charcoal, painting became her true passion early in life. Her first recognition came in grammar school when she won the state-wide intramural painting competition. She studied and painted in watercolor throughout her formative years and well into High School, showing in numerous venues state-wide, drawing inspiration from the natural world and using her family members as models. Later she trained in graphic arts and illustration at the Academy of Art in San Francisco.
Several mentors have significantly influenced Weisberg’s work and their critiques and support have been instrumental in forming her decision to move through watercolor to acrylic and then eventually to oil.
Kathryn's interest in native cultures, wildlife in their native habitat and stunning views of the natural world has taken Weisberg around the globe. Though classically trained in composition, value, color and the fundamentals of painting, Kathryn considers herself a life-long student of painting and of the natural world she loves. Each painting brings renewed respect for the genius of the Masters and similarly, for the forces that have shaped our planet. Technique and training bring lasting quality to her paintings, but passion for the subject infuses them with emotion. Painting en plein aire provides the added elements of atmosphere and spontaneity that keep her landscapes fresh and vibrant.
Following her formal studies, Weisberg exhibited widely in the U.S. and Canada for the past 20 years. She is a member of Oil Painters of America and is in the permanent collection of the St. Hubert’s Giralda Musem. Her work can be seen in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the US, Canada and Europe. She has been selected to participate in juried exhibitions with Westwind Gallery, Casper, WY, Prestige Gallery, Ontario Canada, the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, St. Hubert’s Giralda, the Southeastern Wildlife Exhibition, Art Showcase and the Vancouver International Exhibition. She was an invited artist in the Endangered Species Foundation World Tour in 1994 and showed with the Pacific Rim.
Currently, Weisberg resides in the Northern Idaho Panhandle near the Canadian border. She paints daily in her studio and in Plein Aire in the Spring to Fall months.
